Disney character Merida from the movie "Brave" got a makeover this week, and loads of parents weren’t having it. The animated heroine got all gussied up in preparation for her induction into the Disney Princess Collection (who knew such pomp and circumstance existed?). Disney released a rendering and it became evident that little Merida had received a sassy new look.
Parents complained that she had a deeper neckline, fuller hips, lipstick and voluptuously teased hair. There was even talk of a ‘come hither’ look. As word spread more and more parents weighed in and agreed that yes, Merida was looking damn fine. Before we could even wipe the drool from our chins, our nation had plummeted into some serious sexy cartoon character terrain.

Of course, this comes right on the heels of the recent Candy Land board rejiggering. Queen Frostine got fishnets and frumpy ol’ Gramma Nut allegedly got a boob job (emphasis on allegedly).
Back in the day, board games featured hungry hippos and an animated movie meant watching Winnie the Pooh futz around with his honey pot. Yes, Pooh might’ve been borderline depressive with low self-esteem, but we could wrap our minds around his appearance (just not our arms around his waist).
Sure, Betty Boop used to wear a garter belt, and Thelma from "Scooby Doo" was all about her school girl skirt, but for every Betty there was a plump robotic maid named Rosey, and for every Thelma there was a gangly Olive Oyl.
Modern animation has gone off the rails with its sexy factor, especially when it comes to these Disney princesses. Ariel…seriously?! Smoking hot. Princess Jasmine in a tube top? Wowza. And what about the guys? What woman in her early 30s can honestly say she didn’t learn to French kiss on a Prince Eric doll?
So what’s the solution? Pockmarks and rosacea. If Merida is a teenager, give her some acne scars across her cheeks. Bestow Jasmine with the freshman 15, and Pocahontas with a bad case of pubescent menstrual cramps. Let Cinderella experiment with glitter makeup and lipstick that’s three shades too dark, so that one day she’ll look back at pictures from her youth and realize she was unknowingly made up like a chola for every single school dance.
Yes, lets create some cartoon characters that girls can truly relate to.

UPDATE, 5:52 PM: The other player in the battle over who owns the movie rights to Dungeons & Dragons has just made their latest move. Regardless of the copyright and trademark infringement complaint filed today by Hasbro, Sweetpea Entertainment say they intend to move ahead with their D&D film at Warner Bros. “This is nothing but shameless opportunism on the part of Hasbro, an effort to use the Court and the legal process in an attempt to delay the project,” said Sweetpea’s Courtney Solomon in a statement late Tuesday. Having retained powerhouse entertainment lawyer Patricia Glazer of Glaser Weil Fink Jacobs Howard Avchen & Shapiro, the producer says Sweetpea hopes to deal with the legal matter “quickly and firmly and we are confident we will prevail.” Glazer calls Hasbro’s suit “classic Hollywood shenanigans.” Read the full statement from Sweetpea below:
Sweetpea Entertainment has had Dungeons & Dragons motion picture rights since the 1990’s including sequel, prequel and remake rights” said Sweetpea principal Courtney Solomon. “We have made three pictures so far, and we’re going to make more –including the tentpole project that is currently in advanced stages of development with Warner Bros.”
Last week, trades had reported that Warner Bros. was proceeding with the development of the project, working with a script by David Leslie Johnson, to be produced by Roy Lee, Courtney Solomon and Allan Zeman.
“This is nothing but shameless opportunism on the part of Hasbro, an effort to use the Court and the legal process in an attempt to delay the project,” continued Solomon. “We intend to deal with them quickly and firmly and we are confident we will prevail – just as we did in the 1990’s, when the last legal challenge ended with a confirmation of Sweepea’s rights.
Sweetpea has retained Patricia Glaser of Glaser Weil Fink Jacobs Howard Avchen & Shapiro LLP as litigation counsel. “Another suit filed to try to put the freeze on a project,” said Glaser. “Classic Hollywood shenanigans.”

Mother’s Day is Sunday, and if you’ve yet to think of something special to do for your mom, consider treating her (or your mother-in-law or the mother of your children) to a marathon of films that will make her smile, sniffle or sing. Be aware that you will not find classic tear-jerkers like "Terms of Endearment" or "Stepmom" on this list, because it’s time to branch out!

Here are my six personality-specific picks for the movie-loving mom you want to celebrate.

‘Easy A’<strong>For moms who were cool during adolescence (and/or still are):</strong>
You might be wondering why a mom would want to watch a high-school comedy, but main character Olive (Emma Stone) has the kind of patient, funny mom (played to perfection by Patricia Clarkson) everybody wishes they had at 16. Rosemary is open about her own teen antics; is willing to listen — really listen — to Olive during her whole "Scarlet Letter" experiment; and she makes her kids and her husband laugh on a regular basis. For extra laughs, reminisce about the craziest thing you did as a teenager.’Brave’<strong>For mothers of daughters:</strong>
Pixar’s Oscar-winning drama gives the term "mama bear" a literal meaning. Scottish princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) and her regal mother Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) don’t see eye to eye about much of anything, especially the idea of young Merida picking an acceptable suitor. But when a curse turns the Queen into a bear, Merida finally learns to see things from her mom’s point of view — and vice versa. It’s not a "Freaky Friday"-style body swap, but a story of mutual understanding, respect and trust that all mothers and daughters should be able to enjoy. ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ <strong>For mothers of sons:</strong>
Plenty of women (and therefore moms) prefer sci-fi action thrillers to romantic comedies, and if your mom appreciates strong, kick-butt heroines who will do anything and everything to protect their kids, she will definitely relate to Sarah Connor (a ripped Linda Hamilton). While some viewers might only remember Hamilton’s biceps, mothers will understand the motivation behind the washboard abs and blazing guns — Sarah’s need to protect tween son John against the very real cyborg threat from the future. Don’t forget to tell your mom why she’s as awesome as Sarah Connor.

Dr. Phil claims that Gawker caused his ratings to drop by lifting video from his show and he’s going after them for it. The copyright infringement suit is over the TV shrink’s interview with the man who says he fooled Heisman Trophy runner-up Manti Te’o into thinking he was his fake dead girlfriend. In an 8-page complaint (read it here) filed today in federal court in Texarkana, Texas, Dr. Phil Show copyright holders Peteski Productions sent notice to Gawker Media and its sports website Deadspin that they want unspecified damages and a jury trial. “Gawker deliberately set out to get ‘the jump’ on the rest of the country and ‘scoop’ Dr. Phil with his own content. They did not earn that right, they stole it. They did not conduct the interview, they stole it. They did not ask permission, they blatantly and knowingly infringed the copyright of the content owner and did so in a way that furthered their interest to the maximum and undercut the rightful owner of the protected material,” claims the complaint. The whole thing revolves around two episodes of the syndicated Dr. Phil Show that aired on January 31 and February 1 where the TV psychologist exclusively spoke to girlfriend impersonator and Te’o acquaintance Ronaiah Tuiasosopo.

Related: ‘Dr. Phil’ Renewed Through 2016-17 Season

Previously Notre Dame’s Te’o claimed that he had a girlfriend called Lennay Kekua who had died from car accident and leukemia on September 11, 2012. They had met online and he played out the season in honor of the Standford student. As Deadspin revealed on January 16, it turned out Kekua wasn’t real and the footballer had been fooled. A couple of weeks later Dr, Phil was going to show everyone how it was done in a heavily promoted two part show – or so the show’s producer’s intended.
“In a premeditated plan to steal Peteski’s copyrighted material, Deadspin posted the video of the second show … not later than 9:30 AM Eastern Standard Time, hours before the Dr. Phil Show aired to over 98% of its viewers. … Although the second show was expected to exceed the ratings number of the first show, in fact, the ratings declined substantially because the result of the “CLIFFHANGER” was no longer in doubt. It had been misappropriated by Deadspin,” adds the filing. The 23-second clip showed Tuiasosopo behind a screen doing the voice that seemingly fooled Te’o. Peteski Productions is represented by Charles “Chip” Babcock, Carl Butzer and Nancy Hamilton of Dallas firm Jackson Walker and attorney George McWilliams of Texarkana.

It’s hard to reconcile, considering the degree to which adolescents now dominate popular culture, but the idea of the teenager is a uniquely 20th-century invention, born out of advances in psychological theory, changes in child-labor laws and a boom in leisure-time activities for the under-20 set. A feat of both editing and blurring-of-the-edges nonfiction technique, Matt Wolf’s mesmerizing, scrapbook-style Teenage conveys the transition in how the world perceived this emerging in-between stage via a series of first-person portraits of exceptional individuals set amid a whirlwind of vintage footage. Ironically, the demo in question seems least likely to appreciate the pic’s arty, innovative approach.
The conventional thinking goes that until roughly World War II, society and scientists alike thought of life as two distinct stages, divided between children and adults. The former were patronized and sheltered up to a certain point, then shuffled off to work in factories at a young age. In the introduction to his paradigm-shifting book, Teenage: The Creation of Youth Culture, Jon Savage, who collaborated with Wolf on this film, reveals that his initial research into the subject began as background for a possible television series, suggesting that he always intended a multimedia approach to the topic.
Eschewing the traditional TV documentary style, Wolf innovates a radically different format for the material, blending archival artifacts with invented elements to create an intimate, far more personal history of the emerging demographic across the four decades between 1904 and 1945, when Elliot E. Cohen published his young person’s manifesto, “A Teen-Age Bill of Rights,” in the New York Times. Though much of the footage has a stock newsreel feel, Teenage is clearly intended to suggest a home movie record of its era. To that end, Wolf interweaves staged, retro-styled scenes of various characters to foster the illusion of a candid look at various youthful cliques of the time, ranging from London’s Bright Young People to the anti-Hitler “Edelweiss Pirates.”
Pic’s most obvious innovation is the absence of a dry, all-encompassing narrator, replaced by four voiceover actors hired to read excerpts from journal entries of the period (embellished with original dialogue designed to match elements from the filmmakers’ research). Jena Malone performs an early-century American girl, Ben Whishaw represents the British youth, Jessie Usher captures the unease of African-American teens and Julia Hummer plays a German fraulein whose lines were excerpted from Melita Maschmann’s chilling Nazi-era memoir, Account Rendered — each directed to sound distractingly contemporary.
When combined with the vintage (or vintage-styled) visuals, these recitations produce an almost Terrence Malick-like effect, contrasting personal impressions with the more objective, journalistic imagery presented onscreen. As a work of sociological history, Teenage withholds too much context to be of use, overemphasizing the European side of what it calls “an American invention.” As a thought experiment, however, it is uniquely crafted to inspire auds to muse on how the experience of adolescence must have felt at a time cusp-of-modern moment when engaged and driven young people wanted to play a more proactive role in their world.
Nearly the entire history of cinema — much of it targeted at consumers in this very age range — retroactively applies our relatively recent understanding of teenagers as a distinct developmental stage to its young characters, and Teenage suggests how famous historical and literary figures (from Marie Antoinette to Romeo and Juliet) might have actually been perceived in their time. Still, 77 minutes is hardly adequate to cover the breadth of the four decades in question, and the film alternates between elegant transitions and confusing stretches as it tries to address everything from promiscuous, free-wheeling American flappers and “victory girls” to the ultra-organized, hyper-disciplined Boy Scouts and Hitler Youth.

After Midnight, anyone? The Richard Linklater-directed Before Midnight doesn’t premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival until 6 pm. on Monday, but an hour before curtain time the filmmaker hinted that a fourth film in a sequence that began with Before Sunrise in 1995 and Before Sunset in 2004, was not out of the question.
Linklater joined the co-stars of the latest installment of his realistic romance, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, at the Tribeca Talks Directors series, and one of the final questions asked of the director was whether the third film was intended to tie up the romance between the American Jesse (Hawke) and the French Céline (Delpy) 18 years after they met on a train traveling to Vienna.
In the third film, Jesse and Celine are not just together they have two daughters in tow as they vacation and bicker in romantic Greece. Watch the trailer and then I’ll get to Linklater’s response:
Ode to a Grecian Yearn

Linklater answered the festival goer’s question by responding that Before Midnight was about capturing "that moment" in Céline and Jesse’s lives. "It wasn’t a summation. It’s definitely not a final vibe," he said, before adding his own twist on a spoiler: "They’re both still alive at the end of the movie…There might be another one. Who knows?" But, he concluded that he and his cast didn’t have to think about it for at least another five years or so.
This could be good news for fans of the film series, which has a die-hard following thanks to its warts-and-all approach to romance and relationships. If the film is as good as the early buzz indicates, the sequel could be inevitable and not take nine years to come out. Oddly enough, although a nine-year time span separates the first and second and then the second and third movies, Linklater told festival goers that Before Midnight was scheduled to shoot this coming summer but production was moved up when the three collaborators realized that they each had openings in their schedules last summer. The symmetrical nine-year space between the movies "was kind of a coincidence," Linklater said.

This week it’s all about the acronyms when it comes to ratings and CBS. Fueled by a strong performance from the title game of NCAA Tournament plus some NCIS, CSI and a bit of the Masters’ final round Sunday, the network took the top spot for Week 29 of the 2012-2013 season. It’s the fourth week in a row the network has been No. 1 in total viewers and adults 18-49 and adults 25-54. For the week of April 8-14, CBS had a 2.4/7 among in 18-49 with 10.826 million total viewers on average, according to Nielsen.
Related: NCAA Title Game Up 18% Over Last Year
Not only was the April 8 NCAA final between Louisville and Michigan the highest-rated program of the week with an 8.4, but it was the most watched with 23.426 million tuning in. CBS also had the second- and third-most-watched shows the week with NCIS and NCIS: LA on April 9 pulling in 17.216 million and 14.103 million, respectively. In total viewership, the April 11 rerun of The Big Bang Theory actually beat all other scripted shows on the other networks with 11.435 million. Unlike ABC, NBC, Fox and the CW, CBS had ratings, share and viewership growth when compared to the same week of the 2011-2012 season. Still, CBS was down from the 2.7/8 among adults 18-49 and 11.256 million watching from the frame before, when the NCAA Final Four was on and so was the 48th annual Academy Of Country Music Awards.
Related: CBS’ Masters Final Up Strong From 2012
As CBS took a slip from the heights of the previous frame, the other networks moved into new positions. With American Idol flexing muscle and making some gains, a controversial new Glee up strong and the return of an almost all new Sunday animation block, Fox broke out of its tie with NBC in the previous frame to solidly take the No. 2 spot in the demo (1.9/6) and total viewers (6.046 million). That’s up from the 1.7/5 and 5.145 million viewers from Week 28 and the second week in a row of ratings growth for Fox. With The Voice hitting a season high on April 8, Fashion Star hitting a five-week high on April 12 and freshman Hannibal growing in its second week over its premiere, the otherwise struggling NBC was clawing in. Nonetheless, while not losing anything ratings-wise from the last frame, the network didn’t gain anything either and got no real love from the premiere of its new reality show Ready For Love on April 9. In the end, NBC found itself in third place in 18-49 this frame with its 1.7/5. In viewership, the network slipped a bit from Week 28’s 5.235 million to 5.073 million this past week.

EXCLUSIVE: If you love sports films like I do, here is one that has knockout potential. Robert De Niro and Edgar Ramirez have signed on to star in Hands Of Stone, a drama written and to be directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz. Boxing fans will know where we are going from the title. Ramirez will play champ Roberto Duran. De Niro will play his trainer Ray Arcel in a drama that focuses on how each man changed the life of the other. It is set during boxing’s Golden Era, when Duran was among top notch fighters including Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Hector Camacho, Vinny Pazienza. Duran fought them all and won 103 of his 119 fights. The focus will be on the Panamanian boxer’s incredible brawls with Leonard, culminating in an inexplicable ending of the famous fight where Duran quit in the ring and cried “No mas,” on a night when Leonard was having his way. That was a terrible ending to a rivalry that was everything depicted by De Niro in Raging Bull, when Jake LaMotta had those classic brawls with Sugar Ray Robinson. This was back when boxing mattered, and well before it got eclipsed by mixed martial arts fighting, which is way more accessible to the public and more smartly run than is pro boxing.

The film will begin production in September in Panama. It will be produced by Jay Weisleder and Jakubowicz of La Piedra Films. “The story of Roberto Duran and Ray Arcel is not only a homage to the golden days of boxing; it is most importantly the story of a fatherless man who teaches every single one of us the true meaning of never giving up,” Weisleder said. Jakubowicz said, “The infamous “No Mas” fight is the biggest enigma in the history of boxing. This movie will answer the enigma, with the best talent any director can possibly dream.” Executive producers include Claudine Jakubowicz, Ben Silverman, Cassian Elwes, Carlos Garcia de Paredes, Max Keller and George Edee. Roberto Duran’s son, Robin Duran will be serving as Associate Producer. Bill Johnson and Jim Seible will be marketing the film internationally through their company, Lotus Entertainment.
De Niro recently wrapped another boxing-themed pic, Grudge Match, with Sylvester Stallone, along with Last Vegas for CBS Films, Relativity Media’s Malavita and Lionsgate’s The Big Wedding. He’s repped by CAA. Ramirez is an intriguing choice for Duran. The intense star of Carlos is coming off a turn in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty and next stars in Libertador. He’s repped by Impression Entertainment, CAA and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof and Fishman.
